HISTORY
In 1975, I (Paul Wright) moved to Derry, New Hampshire from New York City. The primary purpose for moving was to get out of the Big Apple's aggressive atmosphere to raise my son, Peter and to set up a private practice in a town where there were very few Mental health Services. At the time, Derry fit the bill. I began working with a couple of other part-time counselors at 25 Broadway in a basement office under Darren's Music store. From 1978 until 1988, Derry Counseling was located in our 14-room house at 15 East Derry Road.
In 1988, 80 clients a week were going through 15 East Derry Road and it was decided that the practice needed to move out of the house into a medical type of environment. We moved to 44 Birch Street which is now known as the "Nutfield Professional Building." In 1995, we moved to our current home at 4 Birch Street which is located next to Dandelions flower and ice cream store at the corner of Broadway and Birch Street. Down through the years since 1975, I have learned that very often working with individuals, particularly if this involves children, necessitates working with various members of the family. Also, when working with children that schools, doctors, and a number of community services need to be coordinated to give good treatment, providing the child and the family are open to this idea. Marriage counseling comprises a large percentage of our practice. Payment for counseling comes from health insurance companies such as Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Health Source, Champus, Medicaid, Medicare, and many commercial health insurance carriers. We also offer a sliding scale for those people who do not have health insurance that begins at $75.00 per therapeutic hour and is determined by a client's income and other financial obligations. Today, Derry Counseling Service is comprised of Paul H. Wright, Licensed Psychologist; Richard Donovan, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker; and Tim Sergi, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. The group meets together weekly to coordinate cases and to give each other support. The Derry Counseling Web site is the most exciting change for the staff. With the Web site, we are including a one hour question and answer session for mental health questions to assist the public using our e-mail.These sessions will be on Tuesday evenings at 8 P.M. until 9 P.M. Please e-mail us. The questions need to be in a generic form (general questions about marriage, child rearing, psychopathology, etc.). All of the questions will be answered by one of our licensed mental health staff.
